Anchorage June 28, 1983

Dear Family,
Things are really starting to happen around here. We set Kim Russell's baptism date for this Thursday and she is looking forward to that day. We had a very spiritual experience last night when we set te date with Kim. We asked her who she would like to baptize her and she told us she would like her father to. Her father is an inactive member bu does hold the office of a priest so we thought w would ask him.  When we asked him he told us what had happened to him and how he felt about things. When he was growing up in Utah he was one of the most active guys in his ward.  He was an eagle scout and lived as he was told.  When he was seventeen he joined the marines and they shipped him right over to Vietnam.  They trained him to be one of the sharp shooters and knock off the leaders and lead men.  He told us that it was such a rude awakening to the real world that it got to him and he began not to care of the constant threat of death.  He said all he was out there to do was kill and he got to the point where he started to love it.  Plus with all of this came the smoking and drinking etc. and that Nam messed up his mind.  So when he was asked to baptize Kim he told us that he would like to do that more than anything in this world.  He said that he knows what we are teaching is right and true and as we talked with him there wasn't a dry eye around. He sad that when the time comes he is going to be the 'strongest mormon you have ever seen.' Just lately he was asked to hunt down this grizzly bear that was breaking into cabins and killing dogs.  He told us it was easier to face that crazy bear than to talk with us.  But I know that that man has a very strong testimony of the Gospel, more so than a lot of people that come to church and just go through the motions.  He has problems, problems I can't understand because I haven't experienced the things that he has.  But it was the most moving testimony I have ever heard an I will never forget it or him.  He asked us if we would baptize his daughter and come "________ or high water" he would be the to that baptism.  So we are looking forward to a very special and spiritual baptism.
Not only have we got Kim to be baptized soon, but w also have Talya, YaAle and a super golden family we just tracted out.  So next month we should have a couple baptisms and that already is more than double what they got in the first half of the year.
Transfers came out last night and Elder Cox and I were hoping that neither of us were going to get moved because things are now starting to go for us her. But I know that  the transfers are inspired from our Heavenly Father and that he wouldn't move us at a critical time as far as missionary work goes. Critical because transfers occur on Wednesday and Kim's baptism is Thursday and it wouldn't be good to pull one of us out because Kim's dad has placed a lot of trust and friendship in us, and he wants  us to baptize her. So neither of us are moving out of tenth ward. But we are moving to another apartment and we have a change of address. We are going to be living at 7016 Weimer #6, Anchorage, AK 99502
Well, I guess I better go and may God bless you, I love you all. Daren
