Kotzebue January 18, 1983

Dear Family,
Thanks so much for the stationary, it came in 'the nick of time.'
This week has sure been a busy week full of surprises. Last Tuesday the assistants called us up and told us we were going to go down to Anchorage for a zone conference. So last Friday we took off from here and were in Anchorage that night.
The zone conference was really good and I don't know if I told you or not but Elder Tanner my companion in the MTC is now my zone leader! When I came up here to Kotzebue I took his place and he went down to Anchorage to be a Z.L. I really don't envy his job, but he, along with Elder Lasko, did a super job with the conference. I also got to see a few people from the 7th ward down there, like Mark Phillips, a seventy.
We also had a volleyball tournament and everyone as divided up into districts. Our district (The Bush District) went all the way undefeated until the game for 1st and 2nd, where we took 2nd. When I was down there I stayed with Elder Tanner and Lasko and we had a good time talking and bumming around together. One of the first things that we did when we got to Anchorage was we had to stop at McDonald's and get a real hamburger and fries!
It was a very spiritual experience also and I am glad we had the chance to go down. It was really strange to take a 3 hour plane ride down and then come right back. We were back in time for our church meetings on Sunday morning.
Elder Hartshorn and I also had the opportunity or privilege to participate in some Eskimo games. The games consisted of the finger pull, leg wrestling and some other games where you had to move an object out as far as you could without falling. It was really interesting and fun plus we had a change to associate with some of the Eskimos of the community.
Well here I m now a big 2-0 and I don't feel any different. Thanks for all the letters also I really enjoyed them and Lorin what is this between you and Janet!? What happened to Mark? Isn't she still waiting? I really think that's neat though, I figured something would happen as often as you were going down there.
I need some more of those cards with my name on them and the mission address on them. Only this time put the I.F. temple on them!
I am also sending this hair dryer home, it went kapoot on me. Please send me the other dryer you exchange it for, because I hate going outside when it is really cold with wet hair.
Last week we were teaching this girl named Dolly Hawley and we challenged her for baptism. She was real happy we asked and wants to be baptized, but she is Eskimo an there are a few things taht she needs to know and a few commitments she needs to make before we can set a date. But I am really happy that the Lord has blessed us with someone who has this desire.
Another thing that happened when we were traveling to Anchorage is that we stopped in Nome and we had about 1/2 hour. So we went into the terminal and guess who was there? My old branch pres. and his wife, the missionary couple who took Elder Morrison and my place and Freeda Larsen, the lady who we were working with there and she helped us out with our mittens. Anyhow, we had a good talk and I found out that Freeda is getting baptized! I only wish I could be there. I really miss Nome and the wonderful people that are there.
Pres. Papa said, when we were down there, that in about a month we will be having a meeting there in Nome and I will be able to go down then!
I looked all over town for a map of Alaska but the stores were out so I am goign to sen you this one that I picked up in Fairbanks and get me another when stocks are replenished.
Well this is my last piece of paper so I better stop for now and next week I will be using that stationary that you sent me.
I love you all, Elder Daren Wilding
