Anchorage May 24, 1983

Dear Family,
I don't know what happened last p-day, I guess I just got wrapped up in one of my drawings and had no time to write. So today I thought I'd better take some of my study time a write you, and I'm glad I did because I just received your letter today and really enjoyed it! It is always great to hear how everyone is doing. So you are, or I guess by the time you get this vacation will be over, I sure hope you enjoyed it and yes I wish I were there. Anchorage is a lot like that down there, we have the trees, mountains, moose and warm weather It seems like the warm weather is the one thing driving Elder Cox and I crazy. Both of us want to jump on .that ol' slalom and make some waves at Twin Lakes. He is from Oxford which is right by there.
It sure is great to hear how you did in state Lorin but I think that I.S.U. is messed up giving Tom a scholarship when you are better than he is. I'm sure though after your mission the Lord will bless you a hundred fold an if that's what you want to do, he will open the doors for you and you will be successful like Coach Ellis said.
I know that he Lord has blessed me so far here in Anchorage. The sisters before us were tracting about 20 hours a week and would come up with nothing. But when two great (haha) elders like Cox and I get together the doors are opened. We received quite a few more call backs this last week but have not yet taught the discussions like we would like to.
We met, the other day tracting, an inactive member who served a mission (inactive or reasons he does not want to talk about) But is now a successful Alaskan artist so we got in right away and started talking about how he is doing and how he does his work. I shoed him some of my work and he said I have really good potential and that I should give it a try.  Well, flattery will get him everywhere!! But we are going to be working with him and get him active in the church again.
Here are a few pictures that I had made out of slides and I thought you might want to see them. They are just a few from Fairbanks, Nome and Kotzebue. I hope you enjoy them.
Today Elder Cox and I had PPI's with Pres. Papa and he said about the same thing that you did Dad, that I should work 100% and that time will fly by. Time has already flown by and it won't be too long before I am home. I'm not trunky yet and won't be until maybe a few weeks before I go home.
Do you remember R.J. Smith? Today Elder Cox and I had lunch with him and it was so good to see him again, it doesn't seem like I've been gone for over a year, but I guess their little baby is no so litte now and is running all over the place.
Thanks so much for writing Dad, it was great to hear from you. You are all great and I mention you every time I pray. Love, Daren
p.s. I have been thinking a lot about my short term and long term goals and one of my long term goals is to be as ready as I can for hunting season. I would like, if there is any way, to be in on this years draw.  If I can and you need my signature just send them to me or whatever  . . . . Thanks
